Investigator Danny Smith testified that he was on the road from Fort Payne to Centre on March 6 and saw a van matching the description given out over the police radio. He stopped the vehicle and Meeks testified that he and Gavin had driven to Chattanooga that night and checked into a Super 8 motel.

Meeks testified that he and Gavin traveled from Chicago to Chattanooga, where they checked into a Super 8 motel. He said that they then drove to a gas service station and waited for the woman Gavin had been trying to locate, but when she did not show up, Meeks agreed to drive to Fort Payne to try to find her. However, he was unsuccessful. Danny Smith, an investigator with the district attorney’s office, testified that he was driving to Centre on March 6 and saw a van matching the description given over the radio.
